Frequently Asked Questions
What is Functional Communication Training (FCT)?
Functional Communication Training is an evidence-based ABA intervention that teaches children alternative, appropriate ways to communicate their needs instead of using challenging behaviors. FCT replaces behaviors like tantrums or aggression with functional communication skills such as requesting, rejecting, or asking for help.
Will using AAC or sign language prevent my child from talking?
No, research consistently shows that using AAC, sign language, or other alternative communication methods does not prevent speech development. In fact, reducing communication frustration often facilitates vocal language development. We continue to encourage and reinforce all communication attempts, including vocal speech.
How do you choose which communication method to teach?
Our BCBAs conduct comprehensive assessments of your child's current skills, motor abilities, preferences, and learning style. We consider which methods will be most efficient and effective for your child, and often implement multiple communication modalities to ensure reliable, functional communication.
How long does it take to see communication improvements?
Many children begin using new communication skills within weeks of starting FCT, especially for requesting preferred items. More complex communication and spontaneous language use develop gradually over months. Progress varies based on each child's starting skills, the intensity of intervention, and consistency across settings.
